Cal is a professional engineer with a B.Sc in Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. With over 40 years of varied oil and gas industry experience, Cal has had responsibilities in operations, production and reservoir engineering, business development, marketing and senior executive leadership. Other Canadian Divisional responsibilities have included corporate reserves management, divisional maintenance and operations support. Significant contributions were building effective and high performing reservoir engineering and business development teams for Devon’s Central and South Plains and later their Foothills region. In 2008, Cal moved to Devon’s new Thermal business and took on the challenge of building Devon’s SAGD Operations teams. Starting with a staff of 45 that grew to over 650 individuals, he helped his teams achieve top decile industry performance and world class reliability and uptime in exceeding the design capacity of 105,000 bopd for the three Jackfish projects. His work in leadership development and talent management allowed all key leadership roles to grow from 18 to 80 in Jackfish 2 and 3 over a 3.5 yr period and to be filled from internal staff. Presently, these three Devon Jackfish projects produce in excess of 130,000 bopd or approx. 25% above nameplate capacity which greatly reduces per unit opex and improves rate of return.

Currently, Cal serves on two advisory boards for energy services companies working to improve Canadian company competitiveness and improve corporate performance, efficiency and effectiveness. In addition, Cal serves as a board director for a oil & gas and helium exploration company (privately since 2019 and publicly since 2021).
