FAQs

Why wasn't my garbage picked up?

There could be a number of reasons why your garbage wasn't collected. If it wasn't out by 7 a.m., if there were any obstructions such as vehicles, snow or recycling, or if it was too heavy or overflowing. If any of these was the case, it should have been tagged with a reason for non-collection.

If none of these are the case for you, it may have just been missed. Unfortunately that happens sometimes and we do apologize. If your garbage wasn't collected, please contact us at SOLIDWASTE@AQUATERA.CA or by phone at 780.538.0452.

Why wasn't my recycling collected?

There are a couple reasons why your recycling may not have been collected. It could be that it wasn't out at 7 a.m., it contained contaminated items, or it contained items not accepted at the curb such as glass and Styrofoam.

If none of these are the case for you, it may have just been missed. Unfortunately that happens sometimes and we do apologize. Please contact us at SOLIDWASTE@AQUATERA.CA or by phone at 780.538.0452.

Why can I mix my recycling at the curb but not at the Eco Centre?

Curbside recycling doesn't require materials to be separated by paper, plastic, metal and cardboard as they are processed in a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) that separates them out. A MRF is a specialized plant that receives, separates and prepares recyclable materials for marketing to end-user manufacturers. We moved to single stream recycling at curbside to make it easier for our customers to recycle.

Eco Centre recycling does require materials to be separated in the marked blue bins as each material type is separated and bulked in Grande Prairie, then sent to different processing facilities that do not have a MRF.  Aquatera labels the bins in order for customers to easily find what bin each type of recyclables should be placed in. Recycling can be hard so always ask before you place if you are unsure.

If you have any questions, the Eco Centre attendants are happy to help or you can email us at SOLIDWASTE@AQUATERA.CA, send us a message on Facebook, use the LiveChat feature on our website or call us at 780.538.0452.

What does contaminated recycling mean?

Any materials contaminated with food waste or grease cannot be recycled and should be disposed of in the garbage.

Some of these items include pizza boxes, donut boxes or containers where food particles or grease can soak into containers.  These items would be considered contaminated and not fit for recycling.

Please ensure that all waste is clean and dry before putting it out for curbside collection. Items accepted in blue bags include paper, hard plastics labelled #1-7, clean tin food cans such as soup cans, tissue boxes, etc.

Where can I recycle Styrofoam?

You can bring hard Styrofoam pieces to our Eco Centre

Why can't I recycle glass?

My property is vacant, why do I still have to pay for garbage collection and curbside recycling?

It is mandated by the City of Grande Prairie bylaw. On our end, it would be very complex to complete collections if we had to check which properties were not paying for service.

Where can I buy bag tags?

If you have more bagged garbage than will fit in your landfill cart, the additional bags need a Bag Tag sticker attached to be eligible for curbside collection. Bag Tag's for extra garbage can be purchased at the following locations for $3.00.

  • Aquatera Landfill
  • Aquatera Head Office
  • Freson Brothers (North)
  • Safeway (North and South)
