The total cost for water, wastewater depends on water usage.  In addition to the usage charges there are also fixed monthly charges.  There are garbage collection, recycling, water and sewer fixed monthly charges on your utility bill.

Water fixed chargeis a monthly charge and is based on the size of the meter in your home or business.  All single family residential households have a 5/8" water meter.

Sewer fixed chargeis a monthly charge and is based on the size of the meter in your home or business.  All single family residential households have a 5/8" water meter.

How is my bill calculated?

Your water meter measures the water used in cubic meters.  One cubic meter equals 220 gallons.  The amount of water your residence or business consumes is multiplied by the current water and wastewater rates in your area.

What about the rate structure?

The water and wastewater usage rates are based on each operating system.  All customers are on the same Grande Prairie water treatment system.  Grande Prairie customers are connected to Grande Prairie's mechanical wastewater treatment system.  Clairmont and Sexsmith customers are connected to a separate wastewater lagoon treatment system within their community.  The cost of wastewater treatment is greater than the cost of water treatment.  The cost is higher because of the sludge handling and more stringent environmental standards.

The wastewater rates are based on the annual return of sewage to the Wastewater Treatment Facilities.  In addition to the consumption charges; there are also franchise fees and fixed monthly charges.

Was there a change in the way wastewater treatment is billed?

Water rates had previously subsidized the actual cost of wastewater treatment. In January 1996 a new rate structure was introduced to reflect the actual cost of wastewater and water treatment.

What is the meter size charge?

The meter size charge is based on the demand your meter places on the water system.  Larger meters place a higher demand.  Larger meters have a higher cost.

Am I still charged if I don't use any water?

There is a minimum cost charged to supply water services to your property.  You are charged the meter size charge regardless of your usage as long as your account is active.
